Is a reasonable thing when a New York Times reporter, Barbara Crossette once described the fort Fort Rotterdam in Makassar as "the best preserved Dutch fort in Asia", the most well-preserved Dutch fort in Asia. During a visit last year, I still feel the charming feel of a fortress built in the 17th century was. Relics of the Sultanate of Gowa, sturdy fort stands on
the edge of the west coast of Makassar.

Although on some side looks dull with moss attached to the fort walls, grandeur is still felt. Standing in front of a solid gate I suddenly imagine the greatness of the Sultanate of Gowa built this fort. Of 17 fort built around the city, the fort Fort Rotterdam is remaining to this day and still maintained its authenticity.

In terms of architectural fort shaped like a turtle showing buildings about to crawl down into the ocean. Because of its shape like a turtle, sometimes the fort was also called Fort Panyua (Turtle), representing the triumph of the Sultanate of Gowa ever victory on land and sea.

Fort Rotterdam was built in 1545 by King of Gowa-X are named I Manrigau Daeng Bonto Karaeng Lakiung or Karaeng Tunipalangga Ulaweng. The basic ingredients are the construction of this fortress of stone and baked clay to dry. On 9 Agustus1634, Sultan Gowa XIV (I Mangerangi Daeng Manrabbia with the title of Sultan Alauddin) making stone walls with black padas brought from the mountains Kartz Maros region. On June 23, 1635, rebuilt stone wall near the second gate.

History records, to strengthen the spice trade routes and expand the power, the Dutch fort was never attacked during the reign of Sultan Hasanuddin between 1655-1669. Led by Governor General Admiral Cornelis Janszoon Speelman, Dutch troops pounded the Sultanate of Gowa for a full year.

They faced tough resistance Gowa Sultan's soldiers. As a result, some of the fort was destroyed and the forces of Sultan Hasanuddin surrender. As a result of the defeat of the Sultan of Gowa was forced to sign the Treaty Bongaya on 18 November 1667. His name is now enshrined into public universities and one international airport in Makassar.

The fortress was partially destroyed and then rebuilt by the Governor General Speelman Dutch architecture model. Speelman named the fort was the same as the name of his birthplace, Rotterdam. Shape was rectangular fort with four bastions, added one more bastion on the west side. The presence of the castle is not only the center of the Dutch government in the eastern region of Indonesia, but also the coordination center of the spice trade archipelago.

A white statue depicting the Sultan Hasanuddin rode greet visitors at the fort. A handsome statue, but unfortunately there are naughty hands scrawling some parts sculptures. Entering the castle, we can go straight to Lagaligo museum containing relics of historical and cultural artifacts of the past, especially the kingdom of Gowa-Tallo and other areas in South Sulawesi.

Inside the fort there is also the detention of Prince Diponegoro. Historically, Prince Diponegoro who led the resistance to the Netherlands between 1825-1830 was eventually arrested after being framed by colonial cunning ploy to make a peace treaty. In 1834, Prince Diponegoro was taken to Fort Rotterdam after being exiled to Manado. In the solid-walled prison cell that curved Diponegoro was arrested.

Many people believe the Prince finally died in Makassar, but there is also a mention, to avoid conflicts of Prince Diponegoro bodies moved Holland and was buried in a secret place.

Very easy to reach because it is fort Fort Rotterdam in Makassar city center. You can use public transportation or a taxi to reach this place. There is no charge any fee to enter the historic fort which has now become one of the mainstay tourism South Sulawesi.
